For some sports fans, missing a big moment simply isn't an option. Even if they're attending a wedding. Or, incredibly, a funeral.

A new survey of 2,000 sports fans found more than a quarter have secretly checked live scores in situations they knew were inappropriate.

Meanwhile, 17 percent admitted they've even kept tabs on a game during a date. Others confessed to sneaking looks at their phones while grocery shopping, eating with family or attending another sporting event.

However, the workplace remains the ultimate hotspot for score-checking. Nearly half admitted to setting up a second screen at work to follow live action.

Meanwhile, one in four have pushed the boundaries by watching a game during wedding speeches.

How far will sports fans go to stay updated?

Quite far, according to the research. A huge 86 percent said staying connected to a favorite team, match or event is important to them.

Meanwhile, 84 percent said watching live sports matters more than simply catching highlights later. As a result, many are willing to rearrange their lives around major events.

More than a quarter have canceled or changed plans specifically to watch sports. Furthermore, over half worry about missing a live event.

Others admitted they would happily skip appointments, workouts or weekly classes if a big game was taking place.

Perhaps most tellingly, four in 10 said they struggle to think about anything else when they know a major sporting event is happening without them.

    "There's a time and a place"

Wilkin Lee, a spokesperson for Motorola, which commissioned the study, said: "This highlights just how far fans will go to stay connected to the action, even if the timing couldn't be worse.

"Whether it's a quick score check or tuning in for a few minutes, people are determined not to miss the big moments when they're meant to be fully present elsewhere.

"While there's a time and a place, it shows how much live sport has become a part of people's routines."

Which sport are fans most likely to follow on their phones?

Soccer remains the biggest draw. It was named the most-streamed sport on mobile devices, with many supporters saying nothing would stop them watching their team in a major final.

With a packed summer sporting calendar ahead, fans are already preparing for late nights and early mornings to stay connected.

Wilkin Lee added: "With a huge summer of sport ahead and so many matches kicking off outside of normal hours, fans are finding creative ways to stay on top of the scores.

"We're all about helping fans watch, capture, and share every moment. Having a reliable phone and a strong connection means they can keep up with the action wherever they are."
